You're Gorilla Tag's gorilla, dropped into How to Fish. There are no legs and no jump button: you get around by swinging your arms, with Gorilla Tag's own hand physics and movement values, read from your copy of Gorilla Tag. You fish, fight, swim, shop and explore all of How to Fish's islands as a gorilla, alone or with up to 8 friends.
What you need
- How to Fish and Gorilla Tag, both installed from Steam. Melty checks for both and installs everything else by itself.
- SteamVR and a PC VR headset. A Quest works over Steam Link or Link cable.
- No headset? It also plays on the screen in desk mode: the mouse looks, W crawls with the arms, Space pushes off, and How to Fish's own keys do the rest.
Starting up
- Open SteamVR with your headset connected (before or after pressing Play).
- Press Play on Melty. How to Fish opens and moves into your headset as soon as SteamVR is running.
- Menus open on a big screen in front of you (the crosshair, speech and prices float over the world in play). The left stick moves, A or the right trigger selects, B goes back, the grips switch tabs and the right stick scrolls.
Moving like a gorilla
- Move: put a hand on the ground (or a dock, rock, boat or wall) and push, or fling yourself. It's exactly like Gorilla Tag: same arm physics, same jump speed.
- Turn: right stick left and right (snap turn).
- Swim: in the sea you float with your head out. Move your arms under the water and you swim the way you're looking. Look down and stroke to dive.
- Boat: stand on the boat and it carries you smoothly. Driving it works the How to Fish way.
Fishing
- You start with no rod, as in How to Fish. Sell clams and other finds at the shop and buy one.
- With the rod in your right hand, hold the right grip to pull the rod back.
- Swing your arm forward like a real cast. The line flies at the top of your swing, and a harder swing casts further.
- Right trigger reels in. Bring your catch to the shop and sell it with A.
- Left grip switches to your next bait.
Fighting
- Punch by really punching: swing a fist at a creature, player or NPC. It doesn't have to be exact: the hit reaches about 1 m past your hand, so you never have to kneel down to hit a crab. A swing only counts when you aim it at something, so moving around never throws punches.
- Melee weapons: hold one and swing it the same way.
- Guns: the gun sits in your right hand and fires where the gun points (aim with your hand, not your head). Right trigger shoots, right grip aims down the sights, right stick down reloads, right stick up inspects.
- Eating: hold a fish and keep the right trigger held. You bring it up to your mouth and eat it.
- Dying: your body drops as a limp gorilla. Friends can pick you up and slap you back to life the How to Fish way.
Inventory (hotbar)
Everything How to Fish shows on screen is in front of you, just like the original: the hotbar, your money, prompts, what NPCs say, item names and prices. A small crosshair dot in the middle shows what you're looking at.
- A (right hand): pick up or use what you're looking at: items, fish, the shop, NPCs. The prompt under the crosshair tells you what A will do. A picked-up thing goes into your right gorilla hand, not straight into the hotbar.
- X (or left stick right): with something in your hand, X stores it in a free hotbar slot. With empty hands, X takes the next stored thing out into your hand. Press it again to keep cycling.
- Left trigger: put away what you're holding into the hotbar (empty hands, so you can punch).
- Hotbar full? Storing something with no free slot drops it, as in How to Fish. Sell things or buy more slots at the shop.
- B: drop what you hold. Hold B and let go to throw it.
- Rods, guns, tools, fish and items all sit in your right hand and move with it.
- Y: pause menu (settings, save, invite friends). Left stick press: journal. Right stick press: push-to-talk (if your voice setting uses it).
Playing alone
On How to Fish's main menu, create a new world (or load one) and set multiplayer to Singleplayer. That's it.
Playing with friends (up to 8)
Join through the game: everyone needs Gorilla Fish installed from Melty. Everyone is a gorilla, and friends see your arms move the way you move yours.
The host:
- Create or load a world and set its multiplayer mode to Invite Only (only people you invite) or Public (your Steam friends can join).
- Once you're in, open the pause menu (Y) and use Invite Friend to send a Steam invite, or Copy Lobby ID to get a code to send your friends.
Friends joining:
- From a Steam invite: accept it in Steam. How to Fish joins the host's world.
- With the lobby ID: on How to Fish's main menu, paste the host's ID into Join by ID and press Join.
- From your friends list: press Join Friend on the main menu, then right-click the host in Steam and choose Join Game.
Tip: Steam's own pop-ups (friends list, invites) show on your PC monitor, not in the headset. Do the joining at the desk, or use the lobby ID, then put the headset on.
Good to know
- Nothing from either game is in this download. The gorilla (model, face, fur, hand and finger poses) and its movement values are read from your own Gorilla Tag folder while you play.
- The headset shows How to Fish's full original look: its shadows, colours, effects, view distance and detail. If your PC struggles, lower How to Fish's own graphics settings.
- If SteamVR closes, the game keeps running on your screen and moves back into the headset when SteamVR starts again.
