How to play
1. Getting started
- Press Play in Melty. Elden Ring starts offline with the mod loaded.
- Load your character. Once you're in the world, the Bright Lord Ring is added to your inventory.
- Equip the Bright Lord Ring. Branding only works while it's on.
2. Your Nemesis
- When a regular enemy kills you, it rises as a captain: a Shadow of War name and title, a voice line, and its own theme music.
- Each captain has one strength (e.g. Fireproof, Spellward, Unbreakable) and one weakness (e.g. Fragile, Slow to Rage, Cowardly).
- Find it again and its name, rank and level appear on screen. It's tougher than before.
- Captains grow stronger each time they kill you, when they see you die, and every 20 minutes of play.
- Ranks: Captain → Warchief (3 kills) → Overlord (6 kills).
- Kill a captain and it's gone for good.
3. Branding
Weaken an enemy, step close and press Y / Triangle (or E on keyboard) when "Brand" appears.
| Target | When you can Brand it | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Regular enemy | Stance broken, or below 50% HP | Becomes a follower (until you rest) |
| Captain | Stance broken, or below 30% HP | Joins your Army for good |
| Boss | Below 20% HP | The fight is won: the boss falls and joins your Army |
Branded enemies glow blue, stop attacking you and fight at your side.
4. The Army menu
- Tap Map to open the Army menu. That's G on keyboard, or View / Touchpad on a controller, by default.
- Hold Map to open the normal map.
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
| Up / Down | Choose a member |
| E / A | Summon |
| R / X | Dismiss from your Army |
| Backspace / B or tap Map | Close |
- The menu lists each member's class, rank, level, HP, strength and traits.
- You can have one summon out at a time. Summoning someone who's already at your side keeps that one (no copies).
- Resting at a Site of Grace sends summons and followers away.
5. Conquering the land
- Beat or Brand a boss and a garrison of your branded grunts moves into its lair. Brand some grunts first so you have troops to post.
- That boss's whole region becomes yours:
- Squads made from the area's aggressive enemy types (never passive creatures), led by your captains, appear around you.
- They patrol in a random pattern around you and attack enemies whenever you're nearby.
- A new squad turns out every minute, never near cliffs or tight passes.
- Stronghold defence: enemies may attack your regions in waves. Beat the wave or lose the region.
6. Runes
- Full runes for kills by your summoned member and your followers.
- Half runes for kills by squads out in the field.
7. Watch your back
- Betrayal: a summoned member gains strain each time you die while it's out and each time it's struck down. At 3 strain or more, a captain or boss may betray you when summoned and become a Nemesis again. Strain drops by 1 every minute of play.
- Revenge: an enemy that kills one of your Army is promoted to captain. Hunt it down.
- Saved from death: below 15% HP, with a captain or boss from your Army within 30 m, there's a 25% chance it saves you, at most once every 10 minutes.
Sound
Shadow of War audio is mixed under Elden Ring's: voices and music at 25%, effects at 50%.
Requirements
- Elden Ring, version 2.7.1.0.
- Middle-earth: Shadow of War installed (Steam). Its names, voices and music are read from your copy and never shipped.
- Solo / offline only. Runs through ModEngine2 (included) with Easy Anti-Cheat off. Your Army data is kept separate from your save file.
What's new in 0.1.2
- Crash and freeze fixes: fixes crashes a few minutes into play and a possible freeze from overlapping sounds.
- Branding a boss wins the fight: the boss falls, the fog opens, your garrison moves in, and it joins your Army.
- Bosses recognised correctly: only the enemy on the boss bar counts as the boss, so ordinary soldiers of the same type aren't treated as one.
- No duplicate summons: summoning someone already at your side keeps that one.
- Better names: enemies without a name get a Shadow of War name instead of a code.
