It starts in Hearts of Iron IV. Choose any nation on its own 1936 country screen and start the game. Iron Front takes that nation straight into its first Modern Warfare 2 battle, and the war goes on from there.
- Any nation on the map. 11 have their own historical campaign (Germany, Poland, France, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, the United States, Italy, Japan, China, Finland, Ethiopia); every other nation goes to war with its strongest neighbours.
- Your nation, from your own game: its real flag, leader, generals and states, read from your Hearts of Iron IV, with its music playing on the campaign map.
- A medium-length campaign of up to 16 battles across one to three wars: pick which enemy state to attack, or defend when the enemy attacks.
- Generals matter. Before each battle, choose one of your nation's Hearts of Iron IV generals; their real traits become MW2 killstreaks, perks or extra squadmates.
- Every battle is Modern Warfare 2 on a map that fits the state's terrain: you and computer squadmates against computer enemies, with a random loadout. Pick the battle plan: Frontal Assault (Team Deathmatch), Seize the Colours (Capture the Flag) or Hold the Line (King of the Hill). Win, and the state is yours on the map.
- Random events with choices (volunteers, spies, air support, strikes, partisans, enemy offensives), each with a Hearts of Iron IV event picture.
- World news: other nations go to war, annex each other and join your war as the months pass.
- Take enough states or the enemy capital and the enemy capitulates; lose your capital or your war support and it's over. Your campaign is saved between battles.
Solo. Press M on the campaign screen to turn the music on or off.
Needs Hearts of Iron IV and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). Nothing from either game is included. Hearts of Iron IV runs with a small Iron Front mod, switched on while you play; your mod list is put back afterwards. The battles run in IW4L, the open-source MW2 engine, which loads maps, guns and sounds from your own MW2. Closing Iron Front also closes the Hearts of Iron IV it opened.
