Black Mesa vs the Arena. Half-Life's heroes against Quake III's fighters on Half-Life's Crossfire, against bots, and every fighter looks like themselves. New in 0.6.0: Survival, waves of monsters with a shop between waves.
Black Mesa: Gordon Freeman, Barney, a Scientist, a HECU Marine and the G-Man, plus Opposing Force's Adrian Shephard, Otis, the Drill Sergeant and a Black Ops Assassin.
The Arena: Quake III's Sarge, Ranger, Visor, Klesk and Doom, plus Team Arena's Janet, James, Fritzkrieg and Pi.
Each universe starts with its own weapons (crowbar and pistol, or Quake III's Gauntlet and Machinegun) and hears its own announcer: Half-Life's VOX and HEV voice, or Quake III's. The map is shared: Half-Life's full arsenal, Quake III's Rocket Launcher, Railgun, Lightning Gun, Plasma Gun and BFG10K, plus Quad Damage and Haste.
Every fighter has their own hands on the gun in view: Freeman's HEV gloves, Barney's sleeves, Shephard's gloves, a lab coat, a suit, Black Ops black, and each Quake fighter's own colours. Klesk has claws, and the girls have painted nails.
Survival
Its own button on the main menu. You alone against waves of monsters, each wave bigger and tougher than the last, and the run ends when you die. Choose the kind, the map, your fighter and the difficulty:
- Zombies: Half-Life's zombies and headcrabs. When Sven Co-op is installed its They Hunger monsters join them: townsfolk, villagers, farmers, cops, nurses, dogs, skeletons, undead grunts, the Zork, the Gonomes and the Zombie Bull, each with its own size, health, claws, bounty and sounds.
- Aliens: houndeyes, bullsquids, vortigaunts, alien grunts and the Gargantua.
- Humans: HECU Marines and Black Ops Assassins.
There are no pickups. Between waves the shop opens (B): guns, ammo a magazine at a time, armor, health, grenades and healing, paid with the money kills and cleared waves bring. Guns are dear and kills pay little. Your best wave for each kind is kept.
The shop: every Half-Life and Quake III weapon, Quake III's Shotgun and Grenade Launcher, Team Arena's Chaingun, Nailgun and Prox Launcher, and, when Sven Co-op is installed, 34 more guns from They Hunger, Sven Co-op and Opposing Force: knives, wrenches, pistols, SMGs, shotguns, rifles, a sniper rifle, a minigun, the Tesla gun, the Displacer (it can teleport you), the Shock Roach, the Spore Launcher, Penguins, Mk2 grenades, TNT, the Medkit and the Syringe.
Six game modes
- Elimination: two teams, a set number of lives; the last team standing wins.
- Deathmatch: everyone against everyone; first to the frag limit wins.
- Team Deathmatch: two teams; the first team to the frag limit wins.
- Last Man Standing: everyone for themselves with a set number of lives; the last one alive wins.
- Duel: Quake III's Tournament. One on one, everyone else waits in line, the winner stays.
- Gun Game: every kill moves you up a weapon, crowbar to BFG; a kill with the last one wins.
Mutators change the rules of any mode: Instagib, Rockets only, Half-Life or Quake weapons only, Low gravity, Haste for everyone.
Custom Game
- Matchups: Black Mesa vs the Arena, Quake vs Quake, or Black Mesa vs Black Mesa (Red vs Blue, with team markers over players).
- Your match: 0 to 10 bots on each team, bot difficulty, lives, frag limit, time limit, powerups and friendly fire. Or just watch the bots.
- Fighter screens: choose your own fighter and every bot's, with each character's picture from its own game.
Bots with a style
Each difficulty plays its own way: Easy bots hold their ground and walk while they shoot, Normal bots go for the best things close by and step left and right, Hard bots go for everything and dodge your rockets. Every bot also gets a personality each match (aggressive, careful or camper), and some crouch to shoot. Bots pick up health and armor, back off to heal when hurt, and come after you when you run.

- The kill feed names the monster that got you
What you need
- Half-Life (Steam): the map, characters and weapons come from your copy.
- Quake III Arena (Steam): the Arena's fighters, weapons and announcer are read from your own install. Without it the Arena is played by Half-Life stand-ins, and the game tells you so.
- Optional: Quake III: Team Arena and Half-Life: Opposing Force add four more fighters each. Sven Co-op's files add They Hunger's zombies and the extra shop guns in Survival. Half-Life: Blue Shift gives Barney his own sleeves. The Strike Force Heroes Soundtrack plays during matches. Each one is used only when installed.
Nothing from any of these games is included in the download.
Good to know
- Single player only: you against bots, or you alone against monsters in Survival. There is no co-op, online or LAN play in this version; Sven Co-op is only read for its monster and gun files.
- It never goes online and only reads your game folders, so VAC isn't involved.
How it works
Half-Dead Arena runs on the open-source Xash3D FWGS engine (bundled), which plays Half-Life from your own copy. Its game code is built on the Half-Life SDK (hlsdk-portable) and its main menu on FWGS's mainui_cpp (GPL; the menu's source is included in the download). Quake III's MD3 models, skins, shaders and sounds are drawn from your Quake III and Team Arena installs inside Half-Life.
