Play DayZ in first person as a Knox County survivor. Your own copy of Project Zomboid brings in its dead, its items, its skills and traits, its books, its Herbalist crafting and its foraging.
What you get
Zomboid's dead in Chernarus. The infected shamble like Zomboid's, never faster than a walk once they notice you. They come in hordes the size of Zomboid's rally groups, and gunshots pull them in from as far away as Zomboid's hearing distance. They groan with your Zomboid's own zombie voices. Now and then one is a runner that sprints at you, but a runner's hits never infect.
Wounds and Knox infection. Every zombie hit is a Zomboid scratch, laceration or bite. Only a bite can infect you, and even then it's a chance, never certain. If the infection takes hold, you run a fever, fade, die and get back up as one of the dead.
Zomboid character creation. Each new life you pick a Zomboid occupation and Zomboid traits at Zomboid's point costs, with 12 extra points to spend. Your starting skill levels update live as you choose.
Traits that act like Zomboid's. 50+ of Zomboid's traits work in DayZ: stamina, strength, learning, appetite and thirst, healing, how much noise you make, panic (Brave, Cowardly, Desensitized, Adrenaline Junkie, Agoraphobic, Claustrophobic, Hemophobic: the dead chasing you make your hands shake), hearing (Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Keen Hearing), stomach and sickness (Iron Gut, Weak Stomach, Resilient, Prone to Illness, which also changes how fast Knox infection runs), reading (Fast/Slow Reader, Illiterate), Outdoorsman, Pacifist and more. Occupations bring Zomboid's skill boosts and their built-in traits (Park Ranger's Herbalist, Veteran's Desensitized, Lumberjack's Axe Man).
Zomboid skills. Foraging, Fitness, Strength, Aiming, Axe, Long Blunt, Short Blunt, Long Blade, Short Blade and Spear level up on Zomboid's XP curve. They change your stamina, your damage and how well you forage. Press K to see them.
Zomboid skill books and magazines. Volumes I–V of Zomboid's Foraging, Aiming and Long Blade books turn up in towns. Hold one and Read it: while your level is in the range a volume covers, that skill's XP is multiplied by Zomboid's own amount (x3 up to x16). The Wilderness Survival magazine teaches Herbalist.
Herbalist crafting. If you know Herbalist, foraging turns up Plantain, Comfrey and Wild Garlic. Hold a stone (your mortar and pestle) and combine it with 5 herbs to make a poultice, as in Zomboid. Apply it like a bandage: Plantain heals, Comfrey mends broken legs, Wild Garlic cures wound infection.
Zomboid foraging. Press J for Search Mode. Finds are rare and small, and Zomboid's own forage tables decide what turns up where you stand. Higher Foraging levels unlock rags, knives, bandages, pills, machetes, ammo, antibiotics and axes, then Zomboid's M9 and M1911 magazines with random ammo (level 9), and the pistols themselves (level 10).
Search Focus. While searching, press L to focus on one category (berries, mushrooms, medicinal plants, medical, junk weapons, ammunition and more), or choose All to keep everything at its base chance.
Poisonous wild food. Berries and mushrooms have a small chance to be poisoned. Each one shows Unidentified, Safe to eat or Poisonous, and you can only tell once your Foraging level is high enough, or if you know Herbalist.
Zomboid items as loot. Canned food, snacks, axes, bats, crowbars, knives, bandages and more, with Zomboid's names and stats.
Play together. Up to 8 players: Play hosts the game on your PC, and Melty shows your friends its address.
You need DayZ and Project Zomboid (Build 42) on Steam. Nothing from either game is included: everything is read from your own installs each time you play.
