Gorilla PEAK
Climb the whole mountain of PEAK in VR, as the gorilla from Gorilla Tag. No legs, no walking: you move by planting your hands on the mountain and pushing, exactly like Gorilla Tag, only faster and with higher jumps. Everything else is real PEAK: the island, the items, the campfires, your friends.
This is an unofficial fan mod. Nothing from either game is in the download. The gorilla (model, skeleton, fur and lava skins, hand and finger poses) is read from your own Gorilla Tag while PEAK runs.
What you need
- PEAK on Steam
- Gorilla Tag on Steam (installed; you don't have to open it)
- SteamVR and a PC VR headset (Quest through Steam Link, Air Link or a Link cable works)
- A PC that already runs PC VR comfortably. PEAK was not made for VR, so it is heavier than Gorilla Tag.
How to start
- Put your headset on and connect it to your PC so SteamVR is running (on a Quest: open Steam Link, or Link, and get to the SteamVR home).
- Press Play on this page in Melty. Melty installs everything and starts PEAK.
- PEAK appears inside the headset. If you pressed Play before the headset was connected, that's fine: the game moves into the headset the moment it connects.
- You are at PEAK's main menu, with three new buttons for the modes.
No headset? The game still starts in desk mode so you can look around: W crawls, Space pushes off, the mouse looks. It's for trying it out, not for a real climb.
The three modes (main menu)
Pick one before you host or play. The picked one is highlighted.
- GORILLA CLIMB: full PEAK survival. Hunger, cold, poison, injuries, weight, all of it. Slapping the mountain with your hands costs stamina, so rest and eat. Solo or up to 4.
- PURE GORILLA: just the climb. Your arms never get tired. Only hard falls and the mountain's hazards hurt you. Solo or up to 4.
- INFECTION: Gorilla Tag's infection on PEAK's island. One gorilla starts infected (lava skin) and tags the others by touching them. No survival. Needs 2 to 4 players.
In a lobby, the host's mode is used for everybody.
How to get into the real game
- On the main menu pick your mode, then choose Play Offline (alone), Host Game (make a lobby for friends) or Join Game.
- You land in the airport. This is PEAK's lobby. You are already a gorilla here, so practise moving.
- Go to the gate kiosk (the check-in desk by the gate). Your left wrist will say Hold A. Hold A.
- The boarding pass menu opens in front of you. Use the left stick to pick, A to press the start button.
- The plane takes off and you wake up on the Shore, by the crashed plane. That's the real game.
Menus in VR
Menus float in front of you on a big panel.
- Left stick: move between buttons
- A or right trigger: select
- B: back / close
- Left grip / right grip: previous / next tab (this is how you get to Graphics, Audio and Controls in Settings)
- Right stick up/down: scroll
- Y: open and close the pause menu at any time
Moving
- Walk / run: put a hand on the ground and push it backwards. Alternate hands. Faster swings = faster gorilla.
- Jump: push down hard with both hands at once and fling yourself.
- Climb: reach up, plant a hand, pull down. Your hands hold by friction, the way they do in Gorilla Tag. They are not glued to the wall.
- Wall climb / pinch climb: squeeze a ledge or corner between both hands and pull. Between two close walls, push off one, then the other.
- Ropes, vines, chains and climbing holds: hold grip while your hand is on one to grab it. Let go of grip to release.
- Turn: flick the right stick left or right (snap turn). You can also just turn your body.
- Your hands and body can't go through the mountain. If a hand is blocked, it stays on the surface.
Buttons
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| A (hold) | Interact: pick up, open luggage, light a campfire, use a kiosk, open a backpack |
| B | Drop the item in your hand. Hold, then let go, to throw it |
| Right trigger | Use the item in your hand (eat, drink, place, fire the flare...) |
| Left trigger | The item's second use, when it has one |
| X | Next item |
| Left stick press | Put the item in your hand away |
| Y | Pause menu |
| Grips | Grab ropes, vines, holds. In menus: switch tabs |
| Right stick left/right | Snap turn |
| Right stick press (hold) | Emote wheel: point the left stick at an emote, let go |
Triggers and grips also curl the gorilla's fingers.
Your left wrist
Look at your left wrist like a watch. It shows PEAK's own HUD: your stamina bar and what is eating into it (hunger, cold, injury, weight...), your item slots, and the prompt for whatever you are looking at, such as Hold A: Light. Nothing is stuck to your face.
Items: picking up, switching, putting away
- Pick up: look at the item close up, hold A. It goes into your right hand.
- Use: right trigger. Food and drink need a held trigger until the bar fills.
- Switch items: press X. Each press goes to the next pocket that has something in it, then your backpack if you carry one, then empty hands, then round again.
- Put away: press the left stick. The item goes back into its pocket and your hands are free for climbing.
- Drop / throw: B drops, hold B and release throws.
- You have 3 pockets. Some things are too big for a pocket (the backpack and other large items). For those, X and put-away do nothing and your wrist tells you, so that you don't drop them by accident. Put them down with B.
- A held item stays in your right hand while you move, and that hand still pushes off the ground.
The backpack
- Open it: look at a backpack (on the ground, or on a friend's back) and hold A. A wheel opens and stays open for as long as you hold A.
- Choose: push a stick toward a slice, then let go of A.
- Wear slice: puts it on your back. It rides along with you.
- An empty slot slice while you hold an item: stores that item in the pack.
- A filled slot slice: takes that item out into your hand.
- A backpack has 4 slots on top of your 3 pockets.
- Your own pack: press X until the backpack is in your hands, press B to set it down, then hold A on it to open the wheel. Pick Wear to put it back on.
The climb
PEAK's island has the same order as always: Shore → Tropics → Alpine (or Mesa) → Caldera → The Kiln → the Peak.
- At the top of each section is a campfire. Hold A on it to light it. That clears the way into the next section.
- Open luggage with A for items. Eat when the hunger bar grows.
- Everything you interact with in normal PEAK (items, luggage, campfires, statues, friends who need help) is on hold A here. Your wrist shows the prompt when you are close enough.
- At the very top, fire the flare (right trigger) to call the helicopter and finish the run.
Playing with friends
- Everyone needs Gorilla PEAK from Melty, plus PEAK and Gorilla Tag.
- One player picks Host Game; the others join through PEAK's own Join Game or a Steam invite, same as normal PEAK. Up to 4 players.
- A player without a headset can join in desk mode.
Playing normal PEAK again
Start PEAK from Steam as usual and the mod is still loaded. To play plain PEAK without removing anything: in Steam, right-click PEAK → Properties → Launch Options and type --doorstop-enabled false. Delete that text to get the mod back. Uninstalling the mashup in Melty removes it completely.
Not finished in this version (honest list)
- Online play has not been tested with two players yet. The code for seeing friends' arm movements and for infection rounds is there, but it has only ever been run by one person.
- The gorilla's face has no eyes or mouth (you'll see it in mirrors).
- No Gorilla Tag sounds.
- Frame rate on the mountain is well below a native VR game. Lower PEAK's graphics settings if it feels heavy.
- Campfires were checked on the Shore and in the Alpine; the Kiln and the Peak have not been played through in VR yet.
- A few PEAK screens (cutscenes, the end screen) show on the floating panel instead of around you.
