Brotato gets a new zone: The Backrooms. Pick it under Run Options on the character screen, and the whole run takes place inside Escape the Backrooms' levels: real mazes of halls and rooms, not an open arena.
What's in it
- Five levels, one after another: Level 0 (The Lobby), Level 1 (Habitable Zone), Level 2 (Pipe Dreams), Level 37 (The Poolrooms) and Level Fun. After Level Fun you land in a fresh Level 0.
- Every level is a maze, a new one each time you enter it. Walls block you, the monsters and the bullets, and your weapons only fire at what they can see. Monsters find their way to you through the halls.
- To move on, find the exit. It looks like every other door in the level. Listen for it instead: the real exit giggles every few seconds, quietly, and only once you're a few rooms away. Walk through it and the wave ends; the next wave starts in the next level.
- No exit yet when the wave ends? You go to the shop as usual and start the next wave right where you left off, in the same maze.
- Each level has its own monsters: Bacteria, Hounds and Smilers on Level 0, Skin-Stealers on Level 1, Clumps in the pipes of Level 2, Fish and Clumps in the Poolrooms (where the water slows you down), and Partygoers on Level Fun. Smilers still make the lights go out.
- Wave 20 is a giant version of whatever level you're on. Kill it to win.
- Almond Water replaces fruit as the healing pickup, and eight Escape the Backrooms items join the shop.
- No online multiplayer. It's a single-player mod.
You need both games
This mashup needs Brotato and Escape the Backrooms, both installed through Steam on the same PC. None of Escape the Backrooms' files ship with the mod. The first time Brotato starts with it, the mod reads the textures, models, sounds and item names it uses from your own Escape the Backrooms install. That takes about 10 seconds and is cached afterwards. Without Escape the Backrooms, the zone is greyed out with a note saying so, and the rest of Brotato plays normally.
What it changes in your Brotato folder
Brotato's Steam version only loads Steam Workshop mods, so this adds a small override.cfg and a boot script that let Brotato also load mods from its own mods and mods-unpacked folders. Your Workshop mods keep working. Uninstalling from Melty removes all of it.
